What to Do if You Get Sick as a College Student

‘Tis the season of the common cold! Being sick is already uncomfortable enough, but being away from home can make it feel worse. Whether it’s going to a doctor's visit alone or catching up on missed school work, dealing with sickness can introduce new obstacles. Here are a few FAQ’s about dealing with the inconveniences of sickness.

What if I have to miss multiple classes due to my illness?

Missing class can sometimes add to the stress of being sick. Luckily, most of the time there is some wiggle room in attendance policies for excused absences. Check the syllabi for your classes for your professor's attendance policy and determine your plan of action. In more serious cases, like a hospitalization that creates an extended absence period, contact the Dean of Students Office.

Should I visit the Campus Health Center?

The Campus Health Center (CHC) is a great resource for students seeking healthcare. However, the CHC is not free. If you have it, bring your medical insurance information and a copayment if it’s required by your insurance company to your appointment. If you or someone you know are looking for help paying for healthcare, the CHC offers financial assistance to provide the best care for GVSU students.

What do I do if I catch COVID-19?

GVSU follows CDC guidelines when it comes to COVID-19, so make sure you stay up-to-date with these guidelines. Also, be sure to follow up with the Campus Health Center and/or your local primary care provider to make sure you can get well soon. You should also communicate with your professors to make a plan for missed class and classwork and stay home or isolated whenever possible.

What about mental health?

Cold weather and gray skies can bring sickness, but they also can cause feelings of depression. Reach out to The University Counseling Center for on-campus emotional support this semester. If you know someone who is struggling with their mental health this winter or beyond, fill out a CARE Report to see that they are taken care of.
