How to Move Out Effectively

By Joi Mays

Tip #1: Pack Early

It’s tempting to tell yourself you’ll start packing up when the move-out date comes closer. Don’t fall for the trap! Start packing at least a week before you have to move out to make sure you don’t have to scramble the night before.

Tip #2: Start Small

Packing up everything at once is stressful. Start packing up little by little. Start with the items that you don’t use much like posters, decor, and extra bedding before working up to the items you still use often.

Tip #3: Confirm, confirm, confirm

The day you move out can be overwhelming! Make sure you have everything you need to make the process as smooth as possible. Do you need a storage unit? A U-haul? A wagon? A ride? Make sure you check and double-check to make sure that you have everything you need to make this process as smooth as possible.

Tip #4: Extra, Extra!

Couldn’t finish all the food you had left? Donate it to Replenish. Located on all 3 GVSU campuses, Replenish is a basic needs center that provides food, toiletries, clothing, bedding, and more to students in need. Instead of tossing those items you no longer need, send them to a student who needs them.

Tip #5: Pack With a Partner

The best way to make the move-out process easier is to do it with your friends. Turn on some music, order a pizza, and get to work! Packing with a partner can shorten the task and make it more fun.

Moving out can be stressful, but with these tips, it’s never been easier! Before that day comes, get involved on campus with these events.
