Women's History Month: Student Org. Spotlight

By Grace Hasley

March is Women’s History Month! Explore some of these student organizations that empower women in their aspiring careers. Find out how Women in STEM Fields, Women in Business, Women in Cinema, and Women in Computing strive to empower women.

Women in Cinema

Women in Cinema is a community of women and non gender-conforming students in the Film & Video program.

The president of the organization, Kira Mason, shares that, “Our mission is to help female and gender-nonconforming students build their confidence and professional skills so they can get a head start.”

This org aims to make women feel a sense of belonging in the industry and prepare them for a future of success.

Women in Business

Women in Business is an organization that aims to set women up for success in the business world by providing networking opportunities, guest speakers, and a community of career-driven women.

With all of these opportunities, “Our organization wants female entrepreneurs to feel like they belong and feel a sense of community,” says Molly Kleinfeldt, the president of Women in Business.

Women in STEM

It's important to empower college women, but it's also essential to empower girls of all ages. Part of the mission of Women in STEM is to encourage young girls to explore STEM Fields.

The President of W-STEM, Mackenzie Dunn, explains how these girls are discouraged from going into science and technology.

“We want to change this, and we support our members in overcoming these barriers by promoting opportunities for them,” she says.

Women in Computing

According to Business Relations Officer Natalie Taylor, Women in Computing strives to “support women in a male-dominated field".

Women in Computing at Grand Valley State University acts as a support network and resource for women in technology by providing many social, academic, professional development, community outreach, and networking opportunities. The organization prepares members for internships and future careers, and it also serves as an opportunity for students to make new friends.

With the amount of gender disparities that occur in these industries, a goal for many of these student organizations is to provide a safe space for students to discuss career challenges and support one another. It's important to find a community that makes you feel safe and at home, and Grand Valley has many different resources to help you find your people.
