The CARE Team Cares About You
Author: Grace Hasley
The CARE Team (Coordination, Assistance, Response, and Education) is a resource from the Dean of Students Office. The team consists of Grand Valley staff who aim to address the challenges faced by students through a referral process and providing resources. It’s important to the CARE Team that you are in a safe learning environment that will set you up for success.
You can submit a CARE report for yourself or another student. This prompts a CARE Team member to reach out and provide support options or help the referred student connect with another campus partner that can help. Privacy is a top priority, so referrals are only seen by members of the CARE team. The CARE team also keeps a list of different resources that are available to students who need support for medical, mental health, relationship, basic needs, academic, and any other concerns.
Asking for help when you’re in a rough place can feel vulnerable. Emily First, the Assistant Dean of Students, oversees the CARE program. She urges students to reach out, saying, “We are like a bridge. Students may be facing a circumstance and it feels like they have come to a body of water and they don’t know how to cross to get to the other side of that situation.” Emily finds joy in processing through hard situations and brainstorming next steps with students. She knows how impactful the CARE program can be in helping improve students’ wellbeing, ensuring their safety, and supporting their academic success.
You can learn more about CARE, access other resources, and make referrals on the CARE website. Remember, you aren’t alone in navigating your college experience. The CARE team is always here to help.
