Kirkhof turns 50 years old on April 20! With so much history, it’s only natural that we want to know more about how the building has changed. Learn more about Kirkhof’s rich history as we tackle the big questions!

What was Kirkhof before it was called Kirkhof?

When the Kirkhof Center was initially constructed in 1973, it was called the Campus Center! Just like today, it served as the hub for students to hang out and access resources.

How did Kirkhof get its name?

The Campus Center was renamed the Russel H. Kirkhof Center in 1982. It was named in honor of Russel Kirkhof, an electrician who made an individual donation to Grand Valley of 1 million dollars – the largest single donation to the college at the time! Russel was also honored in Grand Valley’s nursing college, Kirkhof College, in 1978.

Why was Kirkhof built?

There are many rumors as to why Kirkhof Center exists, but wonder no more! Kirkhof Center was created to give students a space to gather, create, and engage with their peers to enrich their college experience.

Have any campus firsts happened in Kirkhof?

Yes! The first-ever Presidents’ Ball happened in the Kirkhof Center in 1986, garnering around 300 students in attendance! Now, Presidents’ Balls are attended by thousands of students!

How much has Kirkhof grown?

A lot! Kirkhof has undergone two major constructions since it was originally built – one in 2002 and another in 2008. In total, Kirkhof has expanded 72,000 square feet to accommodate Grand Valley’s growing student population.
