Bus Etiquette 101: Your Guide to the Rapid
By Grace Hasley
The bus system at Grand Valley is a great public transportation resource for students. Whether it’s the Laker Line or another of The Rapid’s routes, the bus is a public space that requires respect and spatial awareness. Before you hitch a ride, think about following these tips to ensure a positive experience for you and your fellow bus riders.
Considerate Seating
Sometimes, the bus seats fill up completely during busy hours. To ensure that as many people can sit down as possible, sit in the seat closest to the window so the outside seat is available for others. Avoid putting your bags, backpacks, coats, and other personal items on the seats around you. If you’re riding with a small child, share a seat if possible.
The seats that are nearest to the front are designated accessible seats. If you can, avoid sitting there to ensure that disabled, elderly, or pregnant people have accessible seating.
Be mindful of noise
Listening to your favorite tunes is the perfect way to have a fun bus ride. If you enjoy jamming out during your commute, put on headphones to keep a peaceful environment for others who may prefer a quiet ride. Have to take a phone call or FaceTime? Keep the phone off speaker and speak softly for a private conversation.
When boarding and getting off the bus
As eager as you may be to hop on the bus, remember to wait! Let other passengers get off before you make your way inside. Say hello to the bus driver as you board, and thank them as you get off. We wouldn’t have the ability to get to campus so easily without them, so show your appreciation!
