Vote all About it in the Presidential Primaries

By Grace Hasley

Do you know when the next time you can vote is? For Michiganders, it’s coming up this month with the Michigan Presidential Primary! Explore this brief guide about voting as a Laker and why you should vote in the primary.

What is the primary election?

The presidential primaries are how we decide who will be running for president in the upcoming 2024 presidential election. The candidates who receive the most votes from all the states’ primaries and caucuses will become that party’s nominee for the general election in November.

Who’s on the ballot?

Looking at the list of candidates can be intimidating if they don’t seem familiar. That's ok! This is the perfect opportunity to research and get to know the candidates before voting day arrives. This is an election where you get to vote based on your personal beliefs and possibly help advance your favorite candidate to the general election.

How do I vote?

Before diving into the ballots, make sure you are registered to vote. The deadline to register for this primary election is Monday, Feb.12. Registering to vote is a fast and easy process that you can do online, so be sure to complete that required step so your voice can be heard.

Additionally, you can vote in Kirkhof if you are a permanent resident of Allendale on Feb. 21-23. If you are an Ottawa County resident, you can register here as well!

How can I learn more about issues that candidates discuss?

If you want to learn more about some of the issues that the primary candidates are talking about, make sure you stay updated with the GVSU events calendar to find INT 101/201-approved events. These events explore civic issues to help you feel empowered to ask questions and engage democratically.

You can also get involved civically through Democracy 101. These events discuss critical conversations that involve democracy. The next one is on Feb. 28, so mark your calendars!

Another way to prepare for election season is to attend Elect Her. This free, specialized leadership training centers around women in leadership and in office. You can RSVP to attend on Feb. 22 from 4:30-7:30 in Kirkhof 2204 (Pere Marquette room).
