Get to Know DSR

By Grace Hasley

Disability Support Resources (DSR) supports GVSU students by providing a variety of resources designed to increase accessibility for students with disabilities.

Timothy Mohnkern, the Assistant Director at DSR, says that disability support hasn't historically been a priority for academic institutions, making it impossible for many people to gain a higher education.

“It’s exciting to be a part of the effort to make college education accessible...," says Mohnkern. "...we can help students gain access when they didn’t have it before.”

A student might come to DSR if they have a permanent or temporary disability, or if they suspect that they might. Defined in the Americans with Disabilities Act, a disability is a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits one or more major life activities. DSR advisors work individually with each student to create reasonable accommodations and services. Some services that DSR provides for students are the Allendale Shuttle Service, assistive technology training, testing center for students with testing accommodations, Campus Links, and many more.

Through these accommodations, DSR helps students access Grand Valley’s resources in a way that fits their personal needs. As assistant director, Tim Mohnkern works to ensure that GVSU has up-to-date information to improve accessibility.

“If anyone in the GVSU community has questions about disability, accommodations, accessibility, etc, we want to talk with you!” says Mohnkern. DSR is located in The Blue Connection room 215.
