Life Hacks for On-Campus Living
By Grace Hasley
Living on Grand Valley’s campus has many benefits, but do you ever wonder how you can live on campus like a pro? From keeping track of your room key, to successfully walking to class in a blizzard, we’ve got you covered with hacks to make life a BRReeze!
“It’s snowing and I have to walk to class!”
Living on campus makes it easier to get to and from classes. However, winters in West Michigan are no joke. Walking to class in a blizzard at least once is almost unavoidable, so make sure you’re prepared. Before winter hits, make sure you have the proper equipment like waterproof boots, a warm winter coat, a hat, and a scarf. If you’re on a budget, there are a handful of second-hand stores within a few miles of campus where you can score some winter armor. Check out this expert-level route that will get you across campus in the warmest way possible.
“Oh no! I lost my room key!”
Losing your keys is inconvenient enough without having to pay the fee to have the locks changed. Stay one step ahead of yourself and prevent key-forgetfulness! Try attaching your key or student ID to something you never leave without, like your backpack, wallet, or water bottle. If you tend to leave your room empty handed, write on a sticky note and put it on your door to remind you to grab your key and ID.
“The line for food is too long!”
Waiting in line for food for a half hour while your stomach is grumbling is nobody's ideal situation, especially when you’re about to be late for your class on the other end of campus. To avoid this, get to know the times when campus dining locations get the most busy. Avoid Starbucks in the morning, stay away from Panda Express at lunch time... you’ll learn the rest. Give yourself a lot of extra time to allow for busy buffet lines so you can chow down on cookies!
“I can’t find anyone to study with!”
Studying with a buddy is always a great motivator, especially if they’re in the same major as you. GVSU is home to multiple Living-Learning Communities (LLCs) where you can live in housing based on your major or other academic interest. With the Frederik Meijer Honors College, Art Housing, International House, and Women in Science & Engineering. In an LLC, you’ll never study alone again!
