Get to Know the Military and Veterans Resource Center

By: Grace Hasley

In the lower level of Kirkhof or on GVSU’s health campus you’ll find the Peter Secchia Military and Veterans Resource Centers. The Military and Veterans Resource Centers offer a variety of benefits, programs, and fun events for veterans and other military personnel.

The Military and Veterans Resource Centers supply student veterans with benefits, scholarships, and a sense of community. Shane Scherer, the Director of the Military and Veterans Resource Centers and a veteran himself, talks about what the centers do for student veterans.

Shane shares that the centers help students with “finding that comradery that they had in the military here on campus… if they want to participate in a student organization, that’s also under the umbrella, help with benefits and scholarships specifically to military students.”

The Military and Veterans Resource Centers provide scholarships to student veterans and support for the G.I. Bill which helps student veterans pay for tuition and housing. They also offer dependent benefits for students whose parents served in the military. There are a few different scholarship opportunities that the centers offer to give veterans an affordable option for an education.

Shane Scherer is new to the team at the Military and Veterans Resource Centers. When asked what his favorite part of working for the centers is, he said he enjoys interacting with student veterans. “It’s a very cool, unique, one of a kind opportunity to give back to veterans in a different way,” he shares.

The Military and Veterans Resource Centers provide student veterans with community, as Shane explains, “The real takeaway is the comradery and being around – transplanting that veteran experience into a university.”

On Veterans Day, November 11, the center is hosting the Laker Vets second annual Run, Walk or Fly 5K. RSVP for this event before November 11 and get your run on with the Military and Veterans Resource Center!
