Lifetime Laker Friendships: How to Make Friends and Overcome Homesickness

By Grace Hasley

It can be easy to feel alone in a large place like Grand Valley. Struggling to make friends is normal, especially with so many new faces to meet. With these tips and tricks, you’ll feel ready to get your squad together in no time! Here are a few ways to get started.

Join a Student Organization

At Grand Valley, there are over 400 student organizations waiting for you to join. Joining a student org is the perfect way to meet people with similar interests and see them regularly. Head to LakerLink where you can find every org on campus and search based on your passions.

Work on Campus

If you’re the type to chase that check, you can apply to many on-campus jobs via Handshake or by visiting the Student Employment Office. This way, you can form friendships with coworkers that are fellow students. Plus, you’ll be getting paid the whole time!

Check Out Some Events

All of the departments within the Division of Student Affairs at Grand Valley are constantly hosting events on the Allendale and Downtown campus. These events are a great way to meet new people. Never miss an upcoming event by checking out the GVSU events calendar or LakerLink.

Unplug for Fun

One of the best ways to make social connections is to embrace life outside of the screen. To get started, try making a conscious effort to put your phone away when spending time with others to fully enjoy the present moment.

Know That It's Okay to Not Be Okay

When going through the process of making new friends, feelings of loneliness and homesickness are common. You are not alone! However, if your loneliness or homesickness feels difficult to manage, the University Counseling Center is here to help.

Making friends on campus is a process that may not go as quickly as you thought. It’s important to keep an open mind and try stepping outside of your comfort zone. Reach out to Involvement Assistance or your RA for more ways to find your community on campus, and remember that the University Counseling Center is here to support your mental health and emotional wellness along the way.
