October's RSO of the Month: The Renaissance Festival Club
By Grace Hasley
The Renaissance Festival Club (GVRen) is a special interest student organization that puts on the annual Grand Valley Renaissance Festival. Their 2023 festival marked 27 years of medieval fun that took over the Kirkhof Lawn on October 8. The members of GVRen organize live combat, entertainers, merchants, music, magic, and more.
Putting on multiple successful events takes quality team work. Hannah, a GVRen member shares that being in the club has, “...given [her] patience and the ability to manage groups of people and personalities during events”. Members of the Renaissance Club earn important life skills along with the fun of being part of a student org.
Members of the org are a close community of students who are passionate about all things renaissance. They put their hard work and dedication together to create the midwest’s longest running student-led Renaissance Festival. Working together to put on impressive events, these students form lifelong connections.
The org’s advisor, Jordan Sickrey is a GVSU alumni and says that “there is always someone who is a shoulder to lean on, even in the hard times”.
The Renaissance Fair isn’t the only event that these hardworking students put on. In March, they host the Dukes Ball, an educational seminar open to all students where you can learn more about the art of the renaissance.
If you are mystified by the magic of the renaissance, The Renaissance Festival Club would love to throw down the gauntlet with you! GVRen is free and open to all students to join, so don’t miss this chance to joust it out with thy peers.
